In most cases this applies retrospectively, unless the work was already public domain in the country where it was first published when either treaty was signed. Only works first published in countries that are members of the WTO or Berne Convention are subject to copyright in Canada.
To simplify, Canadian copyright expired 50 years after the death of the composer or other author for authors who died in 1971 and earlier, and will expire 70 years after death for those who died in 1972 and later. IMSLP follows Canadian copyright laws because the main IMSLP servers are physically hosted in Canada.
